The Privacy Lawyer Workshops

Parry's services include running cyberworkplace workshops. These begin with a general overview of privacy and cybersecurity issues impacting the workplace. These workshops also cover most privacy public policy issues and an overview of applicable law that impacts global businesses. They typically run in one-day or one and a-half day sessions. These workshops run between $18,000 and $30,000 depending on what they provide, where they are located and the group sponsoring the workshop.

All workshops cover all aspects of data management in the workplace, including creating a datamap, cyber-slacking issues:

  • cyberspace in the workplace, including telecommuting, mobile access and road warriors
  • a review of legal cases, and how to manage the legal risks
  • discussions about how to set the company's policies, and whether or not to monitor employee communications
  • new risk management issues
  • an overview of technology used to monitor employee communications
  • cybercrimes, identity theft and cyberfraud issues

The workshop sponsor can then select two of the following for a 1-1/2 day workshop, or one of the following for a 1-day workshop:

  • creation of an electronic use policy that covers the risks and doesn't offend the employees
  • a cyberspace in the workplace interactive session, where the workshop attendees play the parts in a special session to help them understand data flow and risk management in the workplace. The scenarios are custom created to appeal to each workshop group
  • A Marvel super hero skit, using popular Spider-Man, The Incredible Hulk, X-Men and others, along with famous super villains such as Green Goblin, to teach the important issues about cyberworkplace risks. (There is an addition charge of $10,000 for a four-character skit, plus applicable expenses) These characters are being provided under official license from Marvel and can be made available for photos and autographs.

The workshops involve substantial interactivity and can be designed around a special problem faced by the workshop attendees.

The Privacy Lawyer Workshops:

Cyberspace in the Workplace Landmines...can you spot them before they explode?

Although some solid rules exist that are generally applicable to every workplace, far more have to be customized to the specific workplace and the tone of management. A company is at the mercy of plaintiff lawyers everywhere without a well-crafted electronic media policy. But you can't just stop there. Even more dangerous, legally, is the situation when a well-crafted electronic media policy isn't enforced.

Spotting the treacherous territories can be difficult. In The Privacy Lawyer workshops we'll walk you through a fact-pattern and let you see if you can spot the problems. Members of the workshop are given scripts and play certain roles. They act out typical scenarios where workplace technology creates serious legal, regulatory and financial risks for the employer and help spot the problems and identify solutions with Ms. Aftab's acting as facilitator.

One of The Privacy Lawyer workshops is summarized below. Each of the key characters is given a script and some choices in how that script is used. The participants in the workshop work on solutions together. Each scenario is different and some are customized for certain companies, allowing the workshops to be better directed to a problem the company is experiencing. Not all characters are used in all scenarios. The cast of characters, from which Ms. Aftab can select, includes technology management and staff, administrative staff, human resources, security management, website developers, legal staff (inhouse and outside counsel), customer service management and staff, and employees in various positions. (To learn more about the possible characters, click here.)

Fact-Patterns:

Scenario One

Looking for Privacy in all the Right Places...Identifying Data Sources and Access

This workshop scenario is directed at demonstrating how difficult it is to locate all the data management threads, ask the right questions and spot potential risks.

Chief privacy officers, compliance officers and others handling data risk management and compliance issues often complain that the hardest part of their job is to identify where the data comes from, how is is collected and accessed, who has access to it and for what purposes and where and how it is stored. This scenario helps senior and middle management groups understand how to formulate the inquiries and where the needed information is often hidden. This scenario uses a potential merger to light the fire under those responsible for data management. Time is of the essence. Can they find what they need?

Scenario Two

Human Resources and Cyberspace in the Workplace Issues

In this scenario, a typical company's employees interact online and offline. The risks of an everyday electronic communication when it contains a biased or hostile remark, prefers some kinds of personal communications over others and allows people who are not trained in data management security and privacy to oversee monitoring in the workplace is a loaded gun waiting to go off. Learning how to spot the potentially dangerous situations and defuse them, or avoid them altogether is essential. Cyber-risks, abuse and crime are all touched on in this workshop. Participants are taught how to spot the issues early.
